Your hot water system works hard every day, and like any appliance, it won’t last forever. The average system lasts 8 to 12 years depending on type, water quality and maintenance, but it rarely fails without warning.
Here are the most common signs it’s time to consider a replacement rather than another repair:
1. Inconsistent or lukewarm water. If your water never quite gets hot, or fluctuates between hot and cold, the thermostat or heating element may be failing. In an older unit, replacement is often more cost-effective than repeated repairs.
2. Strange noises. Rumbling, banging or popping sounds usually mean sediment has built up in the tank. While a flush can help short-term, heavy build-up signals a system nearing the end of its life.
3. Rusty or discoloured water. Brown or rusty hot water points to corrosion inside the tank, and once a tank rusts, it’s only a matter of time before it leaks.
4. Water pooling around the unit. Any visible leak from the tank itself is serious. A failing tank can burst and cause significant water damage, so don’t wait.
5. Rising energy bills. An ageing system works harder to heat the same water. A new, energy efficient unit can pay for itself over time in lower running costs.
